It’s no joke, whispers behind the screens are now seriously suggesting Joaquin Phoenix could be in with a chance of lifting an Oscar for his portrayal of the Dark Knight’s oldest foe.

Todd Phillips’ Joker has already secured the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and following a star-studded premiere in Toronto film pundits were quick to agree Phoenix’s performance as Arthur Fleck will almost certain deliver hima Best Actor Oscar nomination, if not the statue itself.

To play the role and take on the spindly, grotesque profile of the DC title character Phoenix shed more than three-and-a-half stone.

Fortunately the fans who decided to dress as the wannabe comedian weren’t required to go to such weighty lengths. Costume stores said stocks of Joker outfits selling fast and website reported fans had been ordering coloured contact lenses to complete their look.

In this movie Joker is a standalone fictional story not seen previously on the big screen and Phoenix’s has managed to detach himself entirely from the performances produced by the Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. Both Nicholson and Ledger chose to play the character as monsters whereas Phoenix portrays him as a coward dominated by creepy delusions.

As a clown-for-hire during day, he desperately wants to be a stand-up comic at night...the trouble is, the joke always seems to be on him. Caught up in the cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes a single bad decision that results in a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

This finally leads him to pull on the iconic purple suit and prance down the concrete steps before turning into the homicidal maniac we’d all been waiting for.

It will be this classic image from the film that stays with you and as well as producing great entertainment it will also provide inspiration for serious DC cosplay.

If you do decide to complete your outfits with color contact lenses make sure you buy them from a reputable source, where you can be sure to get the highest quality products and remember to follow all the safety instructions to protect your eye health.
